1) Application surfaces and techniques

The different application surfaces

A construction marking paint is a tool generally used by construction and public works professionals during marking and identification work. This marking product can be used for a wide range of jobs, but can also be used by private individuals.

These aerosol marking paints can be applied to a multitude of surfaces such as concrete, tar, gravel, grass, mineral surfaces, plastics, metals, wood etc.

Do I need to prepare the application surfaces ?

Construction work does not always take place in ideal weather conditions. Construction marking paints must therefore adapt to their environment and enable users to apply marking paint easily, while offering precision, clarity and high visibility.

Although construction marking paints are designed to withstand humidity and expel debris and dust during marking thanks to the power of the spray jet, sometimes the application surface is not at all suitable for use, for example when spraying directly on the ground. In these cases, it is essential to prepare the surface before use.

To do this, we invite you to remove all the debris (pebbles, gravel, any loose waste, weeds or dust) but also, if there's too much water, to try to dry the surface out. As long as you follow these instructions, your paint, whether fluorescent or non-fluorescent (orange, pink, red, white, etc.), will stand the test of time and be highly visible!

2) Storage and handling of construction marking paints

What are the best practices to follow when using a construction marking paint ?

A construction marking paint is a technical tool which, like everything else, requires you to employ the right methods and actions to optimise its durability and the final appearance:

  1. Before each use, shake the can well (even after hearing the rattle noise clearly).
  2. To ensure optimum marking quality, we recommend spraying the paint 10 – 15 cm from the surface/ground.
  3. After use, place the spray can in the ‘upside down’ position and purge for 2 seconds to clear the valve and dispenser. This prevents the spray can from clogging.
  4. To facilitate marking and limit poor posture and musculoskeletal disorders, use a marking accessory

Adopt these best practices, and we guarantee you'll be able to use your paint right to the very end!

For safe handling of aerosols, follow the instructions:

  • Ensure adequate ventilation
  • Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and clothing
  • As with any other handling or storage activity, we particularly recommend that you do not smoke
  • Handle in accordance with industrial hygiene standards and safety instructions

What is the best way to store spray paint ?

To ensure the safe and secure storage of your construction marking paint or aerosol products of any kind, we suggest you follow the advice below:

  • Aerosols should be stored between 15 and 25°C and in 50 to 60% relative humidity
  • Keep containers tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated area
  • Keep away from sources of ignition, heat and sunlight
  • Not compatible with oxidising agents
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Keep away from all foodstuffs and beverages, including animal feed

Storage life in the conditions described before use:

  • Solvent-based paints: 5 years
  • Water-based paints: 2 years

3) Composition of construction marking paints

A construction marking paint is a pressurised container, created by assembling several components.

It is composed as follows:

  1. An aluminium container or can: This is the active product's container.
  2. A dispenser or cap. This acts as a push-button. MERCALIN and SOPPEC CONSTRUCTION paints are all fitted with patented safety caps: MERCALIN or CAPOT TP caps.
  3. A valve: pressing down on the dispenser activates the valve and releases the contained product, in this case paint.
  4. A dip tube: the tube through which the paint flows.
  5. An active product (in this case paint), made up of: a gaseous phase, a liquid phase (solvent and liquefied gas) and a pigment and resin phase.

You'll find all the components of your marking paint in its Safety Data Sheet.

4) Health and safety

Construction marking paint is an essential piece of equipment for any construction or public works worker, or anyone needing to conduct construction works in their home. But it's also a high-pressure aerosol product, which can carry certain risks, particularly if it gets punctured.

To greatly improve resistance, Technima has been developing patented safety caps since the 1990s.

For example, our Mercalin and Soppec Construction range of marking paints for the construction industry feature:

  • A TP CAP: highly impact-resistant (the cap does not break when a full aerosol can is dropped from a height of 1.50 m). It's made from recycled plastic and is fitted to FLUO TP, FLUO TP HYDRO, PROMARKER, S MARK and TEMPO construction marking paints.
  • An IDEAL CAP: also highly impact-resistant, it allows the aerosol to be used in several directions, making it ideal for civil engineering work (tunnels, dams, sewers, etc.). IDEAL SPRAY worksite marker features this cap.
  • A MERCALIN CAP: the first safety cap to be launched in the Nordic region. This is a multi-directional cap allowing 360-degree use of the spray can. The user can open it with just one hand, allowing the marking paint to be used quickly and easily. The Mercalin cap is fitted to all construction marking paints in the MERCALIN Construction range.

As well as offering great resistance, and therefore greater safety for the user, these caps ensure that the paint is distributed cleanly and without dripping.

It's important to remember that each paint has a limited shelf life, so be sure to respect the expiry date on the bottom of the can.

Health and safety

To avoid any risk of accident or injury, it is advisable to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when using a construction marking paint. This is because dangerous professional activities can involve risks of varying degrees of seriousness.

What are the risks and precautions involved in using aerosol marking paint?

  • If inhaled: Take the patient outside into the fresh air and keep them warm. Consult a doctor.
  • In case of contact with the eyes: Rinse abundantly with clean, fresh water for 15 minutes, holding the eyes open.
  • In case of contact with the skin: Remove impregnated clothing and wash the skin thoroughly with soap and water or use a suitable cleanser. Watch out for any product that may remain between the skin and clothing, watches, shoes, etc. If the contaminated area is extensive and/or if skin lesions appear, you should consult a doctor or be transferred to hospital.
  • If swallowed: If swallowed, if the amount is small (no more than a mouthful), rinse out the mouth out with water and consult a doctor. Rest. Do not induce vomiting. Consult a doctor and show them the label. In the event of accidental swallowing, call a doctor to assess the need for monitoring and subsequent treatment in hospital, if necessary. Show them the label.

As a general rule, if in doubt or if symptoms persist, always seek medical advice. NEVER give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

Transporting aerosol products

When transporting a construction marking paint, it is important to protect the aerosol from sunlight. Do not expose it to temperatures above 50°C/122°F.

For example, do not leave products in a car or lorry, as aerosols are extremely flammable, pressurised containers that can burst when heated.
